Characteristics of an emergent reader
According to Reading Rockets, an emergent reader:
- knows some letters of the alphabet
- understands that writing conveys a message
- uses “scribble” writing when writing
- may recognize some words or letters in their environment (words like “stop” or “exit” or letters like the giant “K” signifying Kmart or the golden arches “M” signifying McDonald’s)
Fun Emergent readers that I create for you and your kids include
- A week long plan
- Sight word lists
- Hole punch sight word cards
- Play doe cards for building the new sight words
- Fun little readers
Don’t toss out read-aloud time!
Emergent readers are meant to boost confidence as your child practices their reading skills, but those read aloud marinate their hearts and imaginations with ideas, vocabulary, and just plain fun.
