Honoring Veterans In Your Homeschool
Veterans make up over 10% of Virginia’s population, the second-highest percentage among the 50 states. As homeschoolers, we have the opportunity to teach our children the importance of the sacrifices of men and women in the Armed Forces who have fought to protect our rights and privileges as United States citizens. These resources for Veterans Day include ideas for teaching your students the history and significance of Veterans Day, honoring veterans’ sacrifices and dedication to securing our freedoms, and observing the holiday in a meaningful and respectful way.
Did you know that Veterans Day wasn’t always called Veterans Day? When it originated in 1919 on the anniversary of the end of World War I, it was Armistice Day. Check out the 100-year history of this holiday and how it has developed over the years.
Commemorating & Honoring Veterans
It can be hard to know how to commemorate Veterans Day in a meaningful way. If your kids have moved beyond the patriotic crafts and are now able to invest some real time, emotional energy, and maybe even money, these six Veterans Day activities for kids can point you in the direction of some meaningful and impactful ways to celebrate and honor veterans.
