The Value of Simplicity

“A vocabulary of truth and simplicity will be of service throughout your life.” – Winston Churchill

“Complexity is the enemy of execution.”
– Ed Mylett

“Life is simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”
–Confucius

Parents! What are you learning right now? As we begin to emerge from quarantine lockdowns this week, many of us would say that the past few months have taught us the value of simplicity. We have learned to embrace a simpler version of everyday life—including a simpler take on homeschool. If you have not taken the time to write down your insight from the past few months, then you should.

Here’s why.

First, personal memories are great mementos for posterity. Your grandchildren are sure to cherish your stories, and your perspective, penned in your own handwriting. They are wonderful teaching resources that cannot be bought. They are priceless.

Second, as you plan for the future, let the past few months serve as a reminder for what you truly valued in everyday life when the nonessentials were stripped. What did you miss in quarantine? Was it the public library? You’ll want to make room in the budget for more books this year. What did you enjoy? Was it the great outdoors? Perhaps your family needs a microscope. Maybe you learned to live with less or operate at a slower pace.

Regardless of what you learned: pay attention. Write it down, or you will soon forget. Meditate on how you will prioritize these values as you plan for the upcoming school year, and be sure to talk about them with your family.

How are you keeping homeschool simple this year? Share your ideas with us in the comments below.
