Weekend Entertainment: 15 May 2020 (& printable Charlotte Mason bookmarks!)

As of today, we have just four weeks left in our school year! I’ve started buying books in the last few weeks and someone on Instagram shared with me that their kids call homeschool book-buying season “Mom’s Christmas.” 🙂 I thought that was pretty appropriate.

I’ve got some announcements in this week’s post including a new free download for newsletter subscribers! I took a few of my Charlotte Mason quote prints and made them into bookmarks because I’m always needing bookmarks for school. I sent out an email to newsletter subscribers yesterday with the download link and if you’d like to get your own set, you can have it emailed to you at the form below!

Also, the Build Your Bundle Sale for homeschool resources is still going on! I had a chance to look through all of the selections this week and thought I’d share a few that caught my eye. I’ve already mentioned my friend Joy Cherrick’s nature study guides which we’ve used in our home and they were so helpful! She has one for insects and one for trees in the bundle sale. There’s also an entire Math Mammoth curriculum (which is recommended on AmblesideOnline) available for Year 2; several copywork offerings with printable sheets that include quotes from Beatrix Potter and Laura Ingalls Wilder; and 50% off an upcoming online Charlotte Mason conference! You can take a look at my wishlist for the bundle sale here!

And now on to the links!

Valuation Change “…it’s interesting how drastically valuations can change, nearly overnight. Suddenly, toilet paper is valuable. Rice is valuable. Butter is valuable (Well, butter was always valuable to me). Giving my money to those in desperate situations worldwide is valuable. You know what’s worthless right now? Cute shoes. I was thinking the same thing about people. Suddenly we’re SUPER grateful for grocery-store clerks. (Winco grocery-clerks have been SO cheerful and helpful!) Hospital janitors (!). Nurses. UPS delivery drivers. Unseen Amazon workers filling orders. The garbage-truck driver. People who clean the Costco-stores after hours. Our estimation of them has risen dramatically!”

How Reading Got Farm Women Through the Depression “In a letter to The Farmer’s Wife magazine, another farm woman from Minnesota proclaimed, ‘Let the floor go unswept if necessary; simplify your meals; but make time for reading, studying and thinking.'”

Pond Nature Study This is a well-curated list of books and resources for a pond nature study if you’re looking to add that your rotation. It also includes links to some excellent free resources, including beautiful, printable pond life cards!

Brick Games for the Family If you have any LEGO fans in your house, here’s a free little ebook with ideas for LEGO games that the entire family can play. These include things like Minute-to-Win-It, Tower Building, Charades, Roll & Build, and Memory with bricks. You can download it free until Monday!

Frugal Ideas for Homeschooling (& free printable book budget sheet!) I’m entering the months when I start planning for our next school year, so I thought I might share a few of my favorite resources for saving money on books, curricula, and supplies. In this week’s post, you’ll find 12 ways I save money and pay for our homeschool. At the end, you’ll also find a free, printable spreadsheet for keeping track of your own homeschool expenses!

(2019) Charlotte Mason Picture Study Aid: Vincent van Gogh This is probably my favorite of the picture study aids I’ve written. 🙂

(2018) Charlotte Mason Homeschool Weekly Scheduling: First Grade This outlines how I plan out our weeks and even though I now use a paper planner, the method has remained the same, even two years later.

(2017) Backyard Birding for Beginners This is one of the most popular posts on my website and outlines what we’ve done to attract a variety of birds to our yard!

(2016) Blueberry Muffins with Crumb Topping A tasty little grain-free treat that’s perfect for tea parties!

(2015) Almost Oatmeal Cookies & a Review of “Everyday Grain-Free Baking” This is one of my favorite cookbooks for grain-free sweet treats!

(2012) The space between. “I’ve started small in terms of giving myself more space and instead of listening to a book on my Kindle while I nurse B to sleep, I just lay there and think. Sort of a mental upchuck of all the things that have been brewing in my head over the last so many hours. I guess, at its base level, it’s a scheduled zoning out. And while it can be boring at times, I think it’s good for me as it gives my brain a chance to sort of wind down and figure things out instead of trying to absorb even more. I know I’m at least sleeping better since I started doing this and that in and of itself makes it all worth it.”

Have a lovely weekend!
