5 Things to Do This Weekend
As the unofficial start to the summer season, Memorial Day weekend typically conjures up memories of barbecues and blowout pool parties, beach vacations, and road trips reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde. There’s just something about a long weekend and an extra day off of work at the beginning of summer that makes you want to kick off the season the right way. Even if you’re staying at home and staying safe this year, we’ve rounded up five ways to turn your long weekend into the best weekend ever. Make the most of the start of summer with one of these must-do activities:
1. Host a viewing party for Cruella on Disney+

Tired of your go-to Netflix show and not sure what else to watch? Disney’s latest hit, Cruella, came out just in time to spice up your weekend plans. Whether it’s a few other vaccinated friends or your quarantine crew, plan a viewing party with your friends because they will surely agree that this movie is a must-see. Between the jaw-dropping fashion, the adorable puppy sidekicks, and the major plot twist that will make you gasp, you’ll want to watch Cruella as soon as possible. Oh, and don’t forget treats (black and white cookies?) and costumes (faux fur, obviously!) that would make Cruella proud. Grab your crew and head to a theatre or stream it on Disney+ with Premier Access for a one-time additional fee, starting May 28th.
2. Take a staycation

I know you’ve been technically staycationing for over a year now, but if you can’t get away for Memorial Day weekend, pretend like you’re getting away by turning home into an oasis. First, make your house feel like a hotel: pull out that cozy robe, change the sheets, and light a couple of candles (oh, and if you go so far as to put a chocolate on your pillow, I’d call you genius). Go exploring in your own city by trying a new brunch spot or doing something you rarely do like drive to the beach, find a hiking trail, or hit up a local farmers market. You’ll feel like you’re on vacation without the hassle of travel.
3. Freshen up your home

You’ve heard of spring cleaning, but summer cleaning is just as important. Let’s be honest: when else do you have time for a full home refresh if not a long weekend? To start, reorganize closets, deep clean bathrooms, and finally clean out that damn junk drawer (you know the one). Since this is the unofficial marker of summer, update your decor for the season. Trade darker home accents with more colorful accessories, add a colorful print or two to the wall, or incorporate minor changes that freshen up your home like fresh flowers in vases or citrus oil.
4. DIY a spa day

Because sometimes the best way to spend an extra day off is a little rest and relaxation. First, set the atmosphere. Dim the lights, light candles, diffuse essential oils, turn on relaxing music, and put on a cozy robe. Stock up on all the luxurious products you love, whether it’s a CBD bath bomb or a high-quality hair mask, and get ready for a full day of pampering. Take a bath, indulge in dry brushing or exfoliating, give yourself a facial massage for relaxation and de-puffing, and finish off with a manicure or pedicure in your favorite color. End the night with a glass of champagne or a cup of tea.
5. Make your favorite summer meal

If you’re anything like me, you know the best way to celebrate the start of summer, a day off of work, or really any special occasion is to eat. Whether it was the hotdogs and potato salad you loved as a kid or a fancy lemony pasta from your favorite restaurant, DIY your favorite summer meal at home. Also, make the entire experience feel special: turn on your favorite summer playlist while you cook and sip on a chilled bottle of rosé. Oh, and don’t forget the dessert: channel your adventurous side with s’mores (just like camping when you were little) or homemade ice cream (mint chocolate chip, please!) for the perfect meal that will kick off your best summer ever.
