How to build a planter for climbing plants from old bedroom furniture
As you may already know, my veggie patch has rather taken over my whole garden this year. After a first attempt at growing our own veg in 2020, we’ve gone bigger (and hopefully better!) and have taken over the front garden and patio too – after all, I wanted to use all the sunny spots we have available to grow more fruit and veg.
With the cost of timber having skyrocketed in recent months (even my favourite trusty scaffold boards have shot up in price this year) I had to get creative in order to make some planters for my tomatoes this year. That’s when I dug out an old drawer and started DIYing.

If you’ve read any of my previous upcycling posts on my blog, you may well recognise this drawer. That’s because I got an old, broken chest of drawers from Vintage Mischief many moons ago and I’ve upcycled each of the drawers into different projects, including a console table and underbed storage. You can see all those projects here.
So, with one of the large drawers earmarked as the planter base, I started thinking ahead to when the tomato plants grow and will need supports. Which led me to dig out a rusty old hanging rail to use as a support for the plants to grow up.
Of course, with a top rail to attach string or wire to, you could grow any climbing plants up the supports, so it doesn’t just have to be a productive veggie patch planter for beans or tomatoes – it can be decorative with flowering clematis or lovely climbing foliage.
