There’s a New Alt Flour Coming for Your Snack Drawer—And It’s Seriously Delish
If the wellness world was a kingdom, nuts would be the queen. From almond flour desserts to nut milks and cashew cheese, their reign has known no bounds—until now. A different player on the scene is ready for a bigger spotlight, and it’s coming to a snack aisle near you: Make some room for seed flour.
“Seeds are often an underrated superfood, says Michelle Iannacchino, MS, RDN, founder of The Everly Health. “They are an incredible source of healthy fats and dietary fiber, which help to lower inflammation in the body.”
And if you’re wondering why seed flour belongs in the snack aisle, that’s because of the new Simple Mills Organic Seed Flour Crackers (*cue the excitement*).
Already a leader in the nut-flour world, Simple Mills created Organic Seed Flour Crackers with a nutrient-dense blend of pumpkin, sunflower, and flax seed flours, which have just the right amount of crunch and come in original, everything, and garlic & herb flavors. Is your mouth watering, too?
Plus, they’re the first of Simple Mills’ crackers to receive USDA organic certification, thanks to the use of organic and regenerative agricultural practices that promote healthy soil and help restore the planet (who doesn’t love a win for Mother Earth?). Simple Mills even worked directly with Midwestern farmers to grow an organic sunflower crop to make the three-seed flour blend. And, that’s not even half of what’s to love about these morsels of crunchy deliciousness.
Think you could be into seed flours? Keep reading for more reasons to make these crackers your snack-time go-to.
Seeds pack major nutrition oomph
Iannacchino loves seeds for a lot of reasons, but her top three? First, they’re a source of fiber, which can help improve gut health and digestion. Second, their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids can help decrease inflammation, and lastly, they’re a plant-based protein source.
And that’s just for seeds overall—each individual type of seed also has its own benefits. (Are you starting to see why they deserve a spot on the royal wellness court?)
“Pumpkin seeds are a fantastic source of magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese,” Iannacchino says. “These are all minerals that help to improve mood, sleep, skin, bone and hair health, immunity, energy, and digestion.”
So pumpkin seeds get an A+ on nutrition, but what about sunflower and flax? “Sunflower seeds contain higher amounts of vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant helping to protect cells from free radical damage,” Iannacchino says. As for flax seeds, Iannacchino says they can be used to help improve digestion, lower blood pressure, and decrease LDL cholesterol.
“Flax seeds are incredibly rich in dietary fiber and heart-healthy omega-3, alpha linolenic acid,” she says. “They are such a powerful source of antioxidants and help to reduce inflammation in the body.”

And just to be clear, we’re not suggesting totally replacing nuts with seeds. “Nuts and seeds are often lumped together because they bring very similar benefits to the body,” Iannacchino says. “However, each nut and seed differs in the nutrient load that it carries. For example, almonds are an excellent source of manganese, magnesium, and vitamin E, whereas pumpkin seeds are extremely rich in iron, magnesium, and phosphorus.”
Give your snack time a glow-up
Obviously, nutrition is only part of the reason you’d grab a snack, which is why we asked Iannacchino for a few of her tastiest recommendations for RD-approved cracker toppings.
Fresh guac, hummus, nut and seed butters, dairy-free cheese, smoked salmon, tuna salad, or chicken salad are all her top picks for creating a deliciously nutritious snack spread for piling onto crackers.
Though of course, you can eat Organic Seed Flour Crackers on their own, too. They have that oh-so-satisfying flaky cracker crunch, which makes them both a great charcuterie board addition and 3 p.m. hanger solution. Here’s to filling our pantries (and plates) with the new queen of snack time.
